The task of this project was to design a new University Complex, Faculty of Architecture, in Hamburg’s new rising “Hafen City”.
The design brief required a total floor area of 60.000 sqm divided into three buildings with varied utilisation. The first volume with a total floor area of 27. 000 sqm is to be used as an office building, the second one the University building itself has 24.000 sqm and the third one, another office building is to be designed with a total floor area of 9. 000 sqm.
Given the situation of developing three newly built elements the challenge was clearly in their relation amongst each other and their environment.
As a guiding idea the buildings were understood as actors on the urban stage – individually in their character but through

their interaction the event is possible to happen.
Further on a strong focus was set on the public spaces along the waterfront creating interconnections between built volume, public spaces and water.
To enlarge the Communication Space between “Hafen City” and publicity the concept of the HCU building (Hafen City University Hamburg) provides a public promenade through the building.
As a main attraction point the roof terrace provides a wide panoramic view over the waterfront and the “Hafen City”, thus to set up relations within the urban landscape.
